It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Elisabeth De Nieuwe, known to most as Betsy, on August 28, 2025 at the age of 97. Beloved wife to the late Cornelis “Casey” De Nieuwe. Loving and devoted mother to Martin (Liz), Elizabeth (Kevin) Kelly and Anne Marie (Phil) Pitman. Proud grandmother to Cameron (Emily), Morgan (Stew) Huston, Casey, Jamie (Cameron) McInnes, Mack (Christy) Pitman and Megan Pitman.; and great-grandmother to Blake, Ellie and Miles. Survived by sisters Trudy Bosch and Lucy Thoonen.
Betsy was born April 29, 1928 in Nijmegen, Netherlands to a large family with eight siblings, eventually immigrating to Canada in 1954 where she met her future husband. After marrying in 1958, Casey and Betsy would raise three children in the Toronto area before settling north in 1987 to enjoy retirement.
Betsy loved to garden and had a quick interest in flowers and plants. She would spend many hours sewing, knitting and crocheting in her spare time. Her love of birds and small wildlife would become her favourite pastime. Betsy cherished her many friendships made over the years, however her family meant the world to her above all else. She will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Family and friends will be received on Monday, September 8, at the Innisfil Funeral Home, 7910 Yonge Street, Innisfil, from 2:00pm until time of service in the Chapel at 3:00pm. Following the service, all are welcome to stay for a reception and share more memories. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in Betsy’s memory.
