John Charles Sutton passed away unexpectedly in the early morning hours of August 4, 2025, just 11 days shy of his 79th birthday. Born on August 15, 1946, in his family home in Bay de Verde, Newfoundland, Charlie was the son of James and Jessie (née Keats) Sutton.
Charlie was the beloved husband of Lynne, and a proud father to James (Aurore), Jesse, Nathan, and Callie (Derek). He was the cherished ‘Pop’ of Cooper, Davis, Oliver, and Bearinger (predeceased). He will be deeply missed by his brother Wayne (Irene), and by his nieces and nephew: Jason (Annick), Charlene (Brad), and Jessica (Matthew). He is also fondly remembered by his extended family on Lynne’s side.
In his late teens, Charlie left Newfoundland for Toronto, having quickly discovered that a life of cod fishing wasn’t for him. He pursued trades training and found his calling in sheet metal work—a path that eventually led him to establish his own business, Sutton Sheet Metal. Through determination and hard work, Charlie built a strong reputation in the Greater Toronto Area, earning the respect of both clients and peers. He was a savvy and well-liked businessman who forged many lasting friendships over the years.
Upon arriving in Ontario, Charlie also found a church and community that became a cornerstone of his life. His faith shaped him deeply, and over time he became a respected and much-loved minister, traveling across the country to preach and serve. He later became an elder in his church community, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to the spiritual well-being of others.
Charlie lived with passion and joy. He was adventurous, energetic, and full of curiosity. Whether scuba diving, kayaking, boating, golfing, cycling, playing hockey or riding his motorcycle, he embraced life to the fullest. But above all, Charlie will be remembered for his devotion to his family and his enormous heart. He taught those closest to him what it truly meant to love—and to live—with kindness, integrity, and purpose.
He will be missed beyond words.
In lieu of flowers we know Charlie would have loved to have his friends donate to the Camphill Foundation. Charlie was so happy to find the Camphill Community foundation where his son Jesse now lives. It's a very special place taking care of very special people.
