It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Robert, known to most as Bob, at Hospice Simcoe just a few days shy of his 97th birthday. Robert leaves behind his wife of nearly 67 years, Jean (nee Ferguson); daughter Catherine, son Douglas (Katherine) and grandchildren Patrick, Janelle, Riley, and Joseph.
Predeceased by stillborn daughter Jennifer Elizabeth (Catherine’s twin sister), siblings Bessie (Walter), Gordon (Dorothy), Isobel (Jim), and parents James and Elizabeth (Bessie) McGinley (McLellan).
Bob worked in the Construction Departments at the Head Office of the F. W. Woolworth Company for over forty years, starting as a draughtsman and retired as Fixture Buyer, where he met Jean when she also worked in that department.
Bob was introduced to the game of golf back in 1954 when staff in the Construction Department insisted he must play in their annual golf tournament. He was hooked on the game until, at the age of 92, he retired his clubs. During those years he realized every golfer’s dream – a hole-in-one, of which he had five when playing at Pine Valley Golf Club or Summit Golf Club. He was a keen fan of the Blue Jays and probably one of the few fans still living who saw the Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup.
Throughout his life he enjoyed cycling, bowling, jogging, shooting pool and watching all sports on TV. Jean and Bob enjoyed many golfing trips to Myrtle Beach and to Whilster, BC as well as family vacations to Florida and California. He was a volunteer at Royal Victoria Hospital for over 15 years where he enjoyed working as a Porter. While at Eglington U. C. he served on the Stewardship Committee and assisted with leadership of the young people’s group. During most of his years at St. James' U.C. he was a greeter every Sunday morning.
Arrangements have been entrusted with the Innisfil Funeral Home, 7910 Yonge Street, Innisfil (Stroud). Cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to St. James’ United Church, 2230 Victoria St, Innisfil (Stroud), on Saturday, September 20th for a time of visitation from 1:00pm until the time of service at 2:00pm. A time of fellowship with food and refreshments will follow in the church hall. Bob will rest at the St. James' United Cemetery, Innisfil.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hospice Simcoe or Operation Smile and may be made through the funeral home at 705-431-1717.
