It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Walter Rodway, a wonderful man who passed away peacefully at home on October 8, 2026, with his family by his side.

Walter was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and brother. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Emma Rodway (Cole), his children, Michael (Patti) and Michele (Barry); and his cherished grandchildren, Alexander (Juana), Matthew, Katie (Nic), and Jonathan (Tori). Walter’s family was his greatest joy, and he leaves behind a lifetime of love with them.

Walter was born on September 5, 1936, on the island of Kingwell in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, the fifth of six children born to Ernest and Evelyn Rodway.

In 1955, like so many Newfoundlanders of his generation, Walter made his way to Toronto in search of new opportunities. It was there, at a kitchen party, that he met the love of his life, Emma Cole, from Victoria, Carbonear, Newfoundland. They married on November 22, 1958, beginning a beautiful life together that spanned nearly 68 years.

Walter and Emma welcomed their son, Michael, in 1962, followed by their daughter, Michele, in 1964. Their family grew once more with the arrival of their first grandchild, Alexander, in 1990, followed by Matthew in 1992, Katie in 1995, and Jonathan in 1997.

Walter is predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Evelyn Rodway of Kingwell, Newfoundland, and his siblings Leland (Peggy), Ruby (Levi), Harold (Violet), Ralph, and Albert.

Being a husband, dad, and grandfather brought Walter his greatest happiness. He took pride in his grandchildren, who were a constant source of joy in his life. Family dinners, traveling, and time spent together at the cottage held a special place in Walter and Emma’s hearts. Walter made everyone he knew feel loved, welcomed, and valued.

After his family, two of Walter’s greatest loves were music and friendship. Shanneyganock’s “Music and Friends” is a fitting tribute to a man who found so much happiness in bringing people together through music and laughter.

As we think of Walter now, one of his favourite songs, “End of the Line” by the Traveling Wilburys' offers a comforting reminder that every life is a journey, made meaningful by the people we love and the memories we leave behind. Walter’s journey has reached its end, but the love and friendships he treasured, and the music that filled his life, will never fade.

Walter had a remarkable gift for music. He could play any instrument by ear. He loved teaching and watching his grandchildren play. Many nights were spent playing alongside his lifelong friend, Baxter, while friends and family from “the Rock” gathered to listen, share stories, and enjoy the music. Those evenings were filled with the laughter and familiar Newfoundland spirit that Walter loved.

Though he will be missed so much, his spirit will live on through those who loved him; every time he pops into a memory in your head, any time you hear a banjo, or when someone says "another year".

So, the next time you hear “Music and Friends,” think of Walter Rodway. Picture him with his guitar in hand, surrounded by friends, ready for another Saturday night of music. And when “End of the Line” plays, remember a life well lived, a family loved, and a wonderful man who will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Walter’s name to the Rainbow Songs Foundation.
