William Douglas Sawyer

It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of William “Douglas” Sawyer on April 16, 2026, surrounded by family at the age of 88. Beloved husband to Ruth (nee Black) for 47 wonderful years. Loving and devoted father to Margaret (David) Grozelle and William (Robyn) Sawyer. Proud grandfather to Iain, Emma, Eben, Adalyn, Fynn and Felix. Doug is now reunited with his parents, Ebenezer and Myrtle Sawyer. Dear brother of Don (Gerri); Grace (Ross, predeceased); Margaret (David and Dan, both predeceased); Helen (Marvin, predeceased); Garry (predeceased) (Sharon); and Brian (Sharon). Loved brother-in-law of Susan and Jean (Phil, predeceased). He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

As the second oldest of seven children, Doug learned early the value of hard work, responsibility, and connection – qualities that shaped the life he went on to build. As a hoisting engineer, he quite literally helped shape skylines, contributing to remarkable structures like the CN Tower and the Sky Dome (he would never call it anything different), along with bridges, rollercoasters, and buildings across Canada and the United States. But beyond those accomplishments, it was the quieter, everyday moments that defined him just as deeply. Doug found joy in a simple, hearty meal of roast beef, mashed potatoes and garden vegetables (don’t forget the pie!), in watching television programs that taught him something new, and in the many hobbies that kept his hands and mind busy, from fixing things to tending the yard, feeding the neighbourhood birds, or talking with anyone willing to share a story. He travelled the world twice, yet was just as content puttering in his garage or exploring in his motor home. He took great pride in building not only structures, but a life rooted in care, skill, and generosity – whether harvesting wood to build his parents’ home, working the land out west, or lending a hand wherever it was needed. Above all, he was happiest when he was with others – learning from them, helping them, and spending time with the family he loved so deeply, especially his six grandchildren, who were among his greatest joys.

Family and friends will be received at the Innisfil Funeral Home, 7910 Yonge Street, Innisfil, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Wednesday, April 22; and Thursday, April 23 from 11:00am until the time of service at 1:00pm in the Chapel. A reception and time of fellowship to follow. Doug will rest at the Coulson Hill Cemetery, Coulson’s Hill, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hospice Simcoe, Parkinson’s Canada, or Trinity United Church in Cobourg, Ontario.
